None of them appeared to benefit from their efforts (other than as townspeople), they were just civic-minded. Gov't at the smaller scale seems really accessible now. You don't have to compete to get in; just be willing to do it.Still, it's a nearly impossible task. School budgets are enormous and arcane and quite opaque. Do they need a new 200k whatchamacallit, or does nobody know how to replace the fuse in the old one? I think a lot of towns would do best if they just put the local handyman in charge. Things would be better maintained and probably much cheaper.

Biggest change was coming to the conclusion that politics today is just a distraction due to how hyperbolic and ridiculous it all is. Back then, politics was a bit more niche and not as integral to general discourse in society, now it's discussed everywhere and even entertainment isn't free from it. My general rule of thumb is to educate yourself enough about what's happening in the world, but don't fall into rabbit holes or heated discussions online / in-person, because it's all a game made to confuse you and keep you busy. Focus on your life. Go for a run, go to the gym, read a book, etc. Do the things that will actually impact your life so you can keep you and your family safe regardless of what the political climate of the world is like.
