its because drones are becoming a major threat on the border and near sensitive installations. balloons can be mistaken for drones by radar detection systems so they must be banned. there's actually a video of a US military aircraft firing a hellfire missile or w/e it was at a boy scout weather balloon that was mistaken for a potentially dangerous UFO.
