>>537287559If you want something that will produce so much you'll be able to feed a whole city with it and have a source of food for basically forever, albeit you must keep it either boxed in or effectively abandon a field to it, are sunchokes. You can genuinely produce a few kg of tubers per square meters in even the poorest of soils, and the individual tubers can get as big as sweet potatoes. There are a few things to warn you about tho; first, its incredibly proliferous and nearly impossible to get rid of once planted, because even the tiniest of tubers will restart the whole thing next year. Secondly, the plant itself can grow quite tall (~16 feets), hence the name, so its better to plant them somewhere you dont care that they block the sight. Another thing of note is that they should be kept in soil until eaten, as they quickly rot when exposed to open air, but this can be circumvented somewhat by keeping them in a sand or dirt filled container in the dark and cool ie a basement, which allow them to stay good for months which is useful in winter lest you want to break frozen soil.Honestly its shocking that knowledge of this plant isnt more common, especially since its native to north america. Its basically a super crop, no need to even do any real work or add fertilizer, just plow a field, plant it, by next harvesting season your yield will have quadrupled if not quintupled. I planted ~400 pounds worth of tubers about 3 years ago, and first harvest yielded easily over a thousand pounds, and that was with a simple hand picking of what was visible after plowing the field to soften the soil.
