>>537298519I think it'd be fine, depending on how it's run. Land and housing are areas of the economy that private enterprise is always motivated to run poorly due to the incentives. Slumlording is particularly heinous, all the money just gets sucked out and sent to Israel. The government could probably run the apartments better, for cheaper, and be able to charge less tax elsewhere at the end of the day. Boring government structure with slowly adapting laws and public accountability would work really well for housing. There's nothing to really innovate on with apartments so why do we need private equity owning apartment buildings?

I'm pretty sure the city can figure that out.You don't even need 100% coverage on a city run apartment program. Even a flat "at least 30% of all apartments within city limits have to be owned by the city itself" would be a silver bullet in the heart of rent gougers, and you can probably hit that proportion easily enough just by seizing the assets of negligent landlords and people trying to worm their way out of taxes and shit. Private high-end apartments can still exist, but you need a baseline affordable housing for the regular workers to live in. Someone has to stock your groceries after all, city kind of falls apart if the service industry folks that make a city worth living in can't afford to live there.
