It was the default for so long and it became this normative thing; in doing so it became ridiculously secure in its place. What often happens with cultures like that is they cease to be practiced because people take their existence for granted since they become so supreme and unquestionable. People forget to perform maintenance on the culture. Then the culture eventually becomes vulgar.
