We have trains, light rails, and subways in densely populated areas where it makes sense. We have inexpensive regional air travel elsewhere, and the entire country can be driven by way of our extensive interstate and highway system. There’s no need for trains between states or major cities because people aren’t traveling there often enough and the population between those areas is so sparse. There’s also the issue that even densely populated cities like Los Angeles are still larger by square miles compared to most European cities. It just doesn’t make sense. Almost nowhere is actually walkable or dense enough for a rail system to be economically viable. People like the freedom of being able to go anywhere they want at any time, and our country essentially the same size as the entirety of Europe with only 350 million people.
