Just look up some night rides or gas stations vids on youtop. The thing is these are big cities and they put all of them in in one neighborhood so that part is a proper ghetto while the rest is fine. Detroit got their stuff fixed up and is now a decent place.

This happened within the last 15 years. What's interesting is that the downturn of the rust belt is not unique to America, but the widespread urban decay is. There's Bergslagen which is Sweden's rust belt, and I think most Western countries have their own rust belt but it's something about American politics that's different, other countries demolished the abandoned buildings but Americans let them stand to save money or something.
