good point. Often even cheap table legs will have a bolt and nut connection a couple inches down because connecting the leg to the tabletop only will put too much leverage on the connection, so they secure the legs at the corners with a triangular shaped bracing that secures the leg to the lip under the table. Even if the bolt has an Allen socket, there needs to be a nut at the other end of the bolt to provide clamping force.
It’s possible to do it without a nut but I think it would be more expensive while also being less secure.
I’m pretty poor too but I still find myself fiddling with my nuts fairly often

I never buy cheap furniture like that. If I want something but don't want to pay for it, I'll get some heat treated pallet timber and build it with proper joinery. All it costs is some glue and a little time, but the satisfaction is very high and it's always over engineered to last a very long time.

Because lots of late millennial and after men were fast tracked straight into electric and in many cases cordless electric powertools. They never had to figure out how to apply leverage or think creatively about clearances with all the design constraints of hand tools so when the giant impact doesn't work the first time or worse it doesn't even fit they just give up.
>>537508495
>For the average person those tools are entirely useless.
Yeah, in the same exact way that math beyond basic addition is entirely useless for the average person. If you don't have tools or you don't know advanced math there are going to be entire sectors of things you cannot interface with and you will end up having to make do without or pay through the nose to get someone else to do it for you. It's one thing to be too rich for it to be worth you even thinking about something but vanishingly few people in America are like that let alone the world, so most people are just coping about not wanting to put in the minimal effort to be competent in useful skills.

>>537507895
Because they think they're smart, think they're clever, and tools blatantly remind them that they're dumb deluded failures of a prussian education system that never really taught to do anything but repeat nonsense like a parrot. Anyone intelligent would learn all the tools on their own, education or no education, because you need them to interact with all the machinery and objects that surround you in daily life.

>>537507979
For the first few years, spend what the job would have cost you on tools and then do it yourself. Then you just end up with all the tools and start saving money. And then you become addicted to tools and start wasting money. Kek.

Yes, but the fact that you need to tell us that tells me you need our assurance over what faggots other men are so you can feel big about yourself.
Which seems pretty gay honestly.

I dunno, I just feel like actual men don't need sewing circles where we all gather around and brag about how manly we are.

Nah, its cause we had to constantly fix broken shit or buy our own, while having people steal our shit.

I straight up refuse to do maintenance on tools now, I just tag them out and walk away.

I also have stopped caring about people who take tagged off tools and try to use them or say "that doesnt mean anything" when they clearly see the lock out tag.

We need stupidity and power tool control. If you cant organize and keep a work area clean, its probably because anytime you tried cleaning a boomer shouted "thats not your job" and screamed at you.
>>
>>537508255

Capturing boomer hand tools and refurbishing them is relaxing.

Also spiteful mutants will actively destroy and fuck with your tools and shit if you let them use them, or if they dont like that you have tools and then dont they will sit their with all three boxes open and cover it in MDF sawdust and giggle and say "you can just clean it"

Something to do with the monkey/thumb wrenches having an adjustable thing that doesnt allow you to exert force....

"Adjustable wrenches" are a secondary tool, not a primary tool
If you used two adjustables you would lose alot of torque and it would be harder.

In your dad and grandpa's time, working on cars was ubiquitous. Everybody did it. Cars were so cheap that they could afford to fuck up, scrap it, and buy another used car for $50. We didn't have that luxury. Cars are expensive and mistakes are costly, so it wasn't easy for us to learn how to tinker on cars through trial and error.

However, I did have that experience with computers. When I was younger, I liked getting a hold of as many old junky computers that I could and would take them apart and put together stuff and, back then, internet accounts didn't matter and I had no money so I was free to be stupid and download viruses and the worst thing that would happen is I'd have to reinstall Windows. I think the kids these days are afraid to tinker with their own PC's because PC's are expensive now and they don't have the freedom to try random shit and fuck things up.
>>
>>537508009
Feeler gauge and folding ruler. People rarely use folding rulers anymore, because you have to open them up segment by segment, and they don’t have a hook on the end like a retractable measuring tape.
>>
>>537516763
They were taught to memorise everything in school, so if you don't know you fail the test, and if you do know you pass.
That same mentality pounds through everything they do.
I don't need to know what the exact population of the United States is, but I do need to know where to find the figure.
A quick Google gets you there but it's wise to diversify your toolset.
I don't know any different from boomers just sitting there clueless as ever going "well I guess we'll never find out huh" while I'm looking it up in 10 seconds and have the info ready.
And luck of the draw, it's always some boomer, gen X or older millennial who's kvetching that the kids aren't remembering as much bullshit as the older generations did in school.
The fact that every single kid can acquire any piece of information at any time and have it be 100% accurate and well sourced doesn't matter to them.
Perhaps if they had that skill, it would.

The true fact is that the world uses metric because Napoleon had a small penis. You see, back in the day the standard measurement was the size of the king’s foot. Napoleon had small feet and it implied his penis was small as well. If the French used the size of his foot, it would be a bad look for his masculinity, so they invented the metric system so the implication could not be made. Thus, to this day the world uses metric, all because of the size of Napoleon’s penis.

Organized toolboxes are mostly useless. They were invented by jews to scam goyim into buying toolsets. While in reality disorganized tools can be layed more dense and so you can fit more tools into the same volume. And you don't need them lying down in orderly fashion anyway. Also if you break or lose one piece, then your toolset looks incomplete and this persuades you to buy more, to make your toolset complete. Again, jewish mind tricks to make you spend money.

Even though it’s bait there’s an element of truth to this. There’s things I do myself because I enjoy it, and there’s things I can do in an emergency that I’m competent at but would prefer not to do. And finally there are things that really aren’t worth my time doing or are best left to someone else

I’m not going to waste a day off by cutting all my hedges and going over the garden when I can just pay someone to do it because even though I’d “save” a few hundred pounds every season I’d do it badly and take longer than the gardener. If someone isn’t mechanically inclined and has the money they’re not going to strip down a 20+ year old car on their driveway and rebuild an engine, they’re just going to get a new car or get a garage to fix it

This. All a normal, non-mechanical inclined person needs is a set of 3 adjustable wrenches; a small one, and medium one, and a large one, and an understanding of how much torque screws need to avoid stripping the threads, especially the smalls screws. If you need 2 two hold a nut and a hex-screw, get a second set of 3 for your car or something. If the laws in your country require you to get winter tires, get the specific ratchet wrench for your tire size. Along with the wrenches, get an all-propose indexable screwdriver. Your toolbox shouldn't be larger than an old-school lunchbox, if you're profession doesn't have anything to do with mechanical shit. Anything else is overkill and a waist of space.

A regular tire wrench is fine if you carry it on the road, but even then the ratchet wrench doesn't occupy much more space and it might occupy less space because there's no funky angle on the bar.
When tightening or untightening the screws of your tires, if the force you apply isn't towards the ground, your asking for trouble. You might push the car off the jack and have it fall onto the ground. This means that a regular car wrench needs to be pulled out and rotated every 60 degrees to ensure the force you're applying is towards the ground. A ratchet wrench allows you to quickly back up the wrench without pulling out of the nut.
A pipe wrench will not damage a ratchet wrench if you apply just enough force to unscrew the screw.

> A pipe wrench will not damage a ratchet wrench if you apply just enough force to unscrew the screw.
If you're using a pipe, then you'll likely to destroy the ratchet. If you don't need a pipe, then you don't need a ratchet either. Also you'll need an extender bit for a ratchet anyway, because the handle would be too close to the wheel. Le funky angle on the bar is there for a reason.

A feeler gauge (often used for checking automotive spark plug electrode gaps) has metal strips of various thicknesses and the thickness is stamped on each of those strips.

You slide a strip into a small gap and see if it fits in the gap relatively tightly. Then read the number on the strip. That tells you the measurement of the gap.

>A feeler gauge
which quite frankly is useless. when was the last time you checked the gap on your plugs. just replace them. sparkplugs are cheap. if in doubt, throw it out. feeler gauges had a place in your toolbox 70 years ago, when we couldnt trust a plug manufacturer to get it right. but these days, the quality control is so tight, you almost never need to check. only someone really interested in tuning would use a gap checker.

Im not saying throw it the scrap metal bin if you have one. but it will rarely be used. I generally do most of my own work on my truck and I cant remember the last time I used one.
>>
>>537528623
Both PH. But the tips are slightly different: the thin one can be used to unscrew stuff inside a cylindrical cavity. The thicker one will get stuck. These "no replaceable bits, only regular screwdriver" cavities are actually used quite a lot in all sorts of equipment with plactic body. So Milwakee tools anon would fail to disassemble such device, should he try to.

I always check the gaps in every new spark plug. While most gaps are close to exact, occasionally I find one or two that's slightly off (it may've been bumped or dropped or otherwise mishandled etc). It's during those relatively rare occurences that I'm glad I took the time to check the gap clearances, as I want all plugs perfectly matched for best combustion.

Occasionally removing the plugs and examining them helps me determine the health of each cylinder, without having artificially induced carbon or other potential problematic symtoms. I agree it's a bit OCD but I really like knowing that each cylinder is firing at maximum efficiency, at least as far as the plugs are responsible.

well, like I said, Im just a carpenter. I HAVE to do my own maintenance, cause I cant afford a mechanic!! I drive an old (1980s) chevy s10. My "tune up" consists of me listening to the motor "Does it sound about right?" and watching my fuel mileage. If I notice its running rough, I just change it all out... plugs filters oil cap wires ... spray some carb cleaner in it. I havent done a "carpenters tune up" in about three years. Should probably do one this summer. Last summer I replaced a bunch of stuff that was old and defective. Oil pressure sender unit for gauge, oxygen sensor, thermostat and the wheel bearings and brakes. flushed out the rad, which i hadnt done for a long time. my old s10 seems to keep rollin along. pic related isnt my truck, but its actually very close. I will check out his channel, but I dont need to watch that video, hes exactly right. An angle grinder runs at about 20000 RPM, which is way too high for wood. You cant even sand wood properly with an angle grinder. I have five angle grinders. 2 small makitas, 1 large makita, a small "king" tools (shitty, but its good for scrap work) and an old milwakee.

carpenters use grinders for a variety of jobs ... grindin concrete, cuttin rebar, metal flashing, roofin mats, and a occasionally removin rust. but using it to on wood ... almost never. I like the makitas, they make a good grinder.

Buddy, most of us used tools since we were teenagers, working on our own cars.
You only discovered tools at 30 since you had to busy your mind after your girlfriend cheated on you with an african.

I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck he's even saying. Ratchet wrench? You mean socket wrench. For tire size? You mean for lug nuts? And you don't use a fucking socket on lugs. You definitely don't put a pipe [cheater bar] on a socket wrench to install or remove lugs. You use a fucking 4 way or an impact to remove them and a 4 way or torque wrench to install them.

Canaduh truly is a wasteland. Brown hands typed that statement. ratchet wrench. Your mom is ratchet.

How would your rate your stepdad out of 10?

Now that im in my 40s i can only imagine how hard it is to be someones stepdad, but also having a stepdad.

Is there like a game you can play with so many wrenches?
>>
>>537532180
Actually you can use cheater bar, but not with ratchet, obviously. You'll fucking destroy the thing, it's not meant to withstand excessive torque. Unless you have those big 3/4" ratchets, but even then I'd rather not. Ratchets are for speed, not for tightening things.

No, you haven't.

Anon, why would you quit working on BMW's? They're so simply designed. The engineering is elegant and straight forward. Minimalist moving parts.

One of the reasons I chose not to work on cars at all is because of this shit. Anything past ~2003 is a complete to bitch to work on. Deliberately designed to mess with a mechanic and bleed a customer dry of his money. No fucking way I'm even stepping close to this thing.

Lmao you got that chinese welder from walmart?
>>
>>537532421
That's actually a Chevrolet 4.2 liter straight 6.

It's a pretty good engine, but has some flaws. The aluminum block needs that big ladder bar over the crankshaft bearings to stiffen it. Thusly, you cannot swap out crankshaft bearings while the engine is in the chassis. Old school cast iron block chevys, you could do that.
I actually have to do a job on mine, which is why I have that diagram. There's a connecting rod bearing towards the back that's beginning to tap. If I've caught it in time, I can swap out just the connecting rod bearing and save the motor.
I can't bitch. That motor has 260,000 miles on it.

Here's a photo of the underside of one.

From Amazon like everything else except the stuff I permanently borrowed from my dad. I don't weld much I just wanted to learn how do do it.

Obviously the inlays are cast iron
It's not like the frame on your bisexual bike your ride around Amsterdam with.
>>
>>537532848
Yeah, that block is aluminum. Steel sleeves in the cylinders and of course steel crank, cam, and connecting rods. The pistons are aluminum along with the head.
Better exploded diagram. Last one was for ants.

I'm not looking forward to laying on my back digging down through this mess to get to the connecting rod bearing.

I'm sort of broke and have no other choice.

10/10
even at my worst, when i was rude, belligerant, and goading him into fights, he never lost his cool. He was an old cowboy. He was simple in his pleasures, and like my father, very based on his opinions. He was also a Kinsmen, so I think that made a difference. Alot of people aroudn knock the masons, and I imagine, like any group, there are indeed soem bad ones. But mostly there seem alot of good ones, my step was one of them. He never discussed it of course. He seldom spoke too much, a man of few words, a man of direct action, like my father.

The divorce was kinda my moms fault. And dont get me wrong, I love her to bits (shes gone now too). I was the youngest of five brothers, and younger by about 8 years. So most of my siblings were out fo the nest when it happened. My father kind of sat me down and explained why he was leaving, that he couldnt accept this stain on his character, it was a principle, a point of honour for him. he had been betrayed. he HAD to do it. she left him no choice. I was angry at the time, but over the years, and having been through some shit myself, lookin back, he was right. After about a year, my mom met my step dad. So it wsant him, he wasnt the "cause" of it all. He was, as it turned out, the solution. My mom smartened up after him too. She treated him alot differently, i think she knew she was older now, and wouldnt get another kick at the can.

The part I have to change is #109 and #108. Six times.

In order to get to it, I have to drop a frame cross member, lower the steering rack, and drop the oil pan.

Part 123 is the stiffening member to stop the block from flexing under load.

It's all good. I try to have a basic knowledge of everything I think might be valuable in the future. Electronics, gardening, drones, archery, welding, construction, cooking, knife sharpening, radio, making antennas etc.. I'm not an expert in anything but I can do pretty much whatever I put my mind to.

I use a feeler gauge almost every day. For the most part, I use to ensure that there is no space between a part and parallels on a vice. Or to get the location of my tool.

1) When was the last time you've wrecked a socket wrench with a pipe extender? Be honest.
2) You assume that I use full force on the pipe extension. I just use it for ease. If that much force is needed to unscrew a screw, you're doing something wrong. Granted in the US you might not need to change tires at least twice a year, in which case your nuts might rust there, but that isn't the case here.
You also assume we all are born anglo-kikes. Tabarnac.
>>
>>537529089
>just replace them
You almost always have to gap new plugs, wrenchlet.

>Are you older than 40

yeah. part of it was my older brothers too. I remember one time hiking in Robson valley, and havin a heart to heart with my oldest brother, and he basically said "You know dads right ... he provided for her and us for 25 years, and she betrayed him. those were long tough years for dad, he was a sailor!! ffs. 12 hour days, sleepin in a rack and all. what she have to do, be faithful and look after the kids. "

I kinda understadn my mom too. She was lonely. She was tired of her husband being gone for half the year. she wanted to be a woman, have a man take her to dinner adn dancing, have some fun, have someone to talk to. Its a lonely life being a sailors wife. 20 years she put up with it, the best years of her life too.

in the end, I leanred its really no ones FAULT. they are just people, strugling through the human condition. they make mistakes, sometimes big mistakes. My mom fucked up. Shes still my mom.

Anyways, i gotta roll. time to go to church. My wife and our sons (2 boys) are all almost ready. I not a big fan of organized religion, but like my dad would say "You do it because its a good thing to do." Our sons actaully like going, I hated it when i was a kid.

The older you get the more nuance and perspective you get. Thinks are mostly not black and white.

Good luck!
