HAM radio is the most boring hobby, they have radios with which they can communicate with people on the other side of the world by bouncing the signal from the ionosphere but they never have actual conversations they just talk about what kind of equipment they have and how they get rid of the electrical noise.

Digital modes are the only ones worth experimenting with. Once you get the basics of voice comms down, there's little reason to play with it anymore.

You make as many contacts as possible and log them all, not even talking beyond callsign and location. People do this for field days (the ARRL field day is this coming weekend) and whenever they want to go to a park and try from a mountain or hill (Parks On The Air). It is like a job that you have to pay to do.That said, if you are interested in emergency radio communications and getting into amateur radio, check out a local field day. Clubs are all over the world. When shtf, hams will still be able to communicate.
