Watch lots of Chinese videos on Bilibili (travel vlogs, tech review, anything you'd normally watch on YouTube) because Changs love to put subtitles on everything for some reason and it makes it easy as fuck to learn. Do your Anki every day, watch Bilibili every day. You can't write but you can read and you can't speak (well) but you can listen. Which is good progress for 1 year.

>>537547739I think the real reason so many videos have subtitles is that China has so many dialects that share the same writing system (like Cantonese, Shanghainese) that they need it since not everyone speaks Mandarin especially the older generation. So Cantonese speakers and Mandarin speaks write with the same words which share the same meaning. While if I write something in French, an Englishman will not be able to understand it as the words are different. So the Chinese uniquely benefit much more adding subtitles to everything, more than would adding English subtitles to an English video.

Most people can’t handle the grind of listening to Ching Chong Bing Bing for 6 hours a day, reviewing thousands of hanzi cards and mining sentences from billibilli. You have to really want to know Mandarin to have that kind of enthusiasm and willpower to put in that kind of effort. It probably takes like 3-4 years of keeping up with this grind before you can speak somewhat confidently. It’s probably not worth the effort for most people
