The number becomes unfathomably large long before the chess board is filled. But what if we started with a large number like 1.2 billion, and we halved it every generation (fertility rate of 1.0)? How many generations (or squares) does it take before the next is completely empty? Only about 12 or 13 generations (less than 300 years). In fact, though there are a few left, theoretically, it becomes really grim long before you get that far. If something doesn't happen quickly, we're fucking doomed.
