Also if you were a cheap fuck you could find gas coupons on the back of receipts and in weekly free newspapers (we had the foxxy shopper). Maybe the cars themselves have gotten more expensive, but that is more due to regulatory requirements that at least have the benefit of cleaner air and less dying in accidents. People don't drive around now because they have a lot more options for entertainment and leisure at home.
