Warm water port. Not even a particularly good one since it still only leads into the black sea, but if your Russia its better than the rest of your ports being frozen for more than half the year.

Ancestral homeland of the Khazars

Excellent natural harbor that doesn't freeze in the winter

It is rightly Anglo clay, unironically
We sailed 300 ships there after the Norman conquest in 1066
Donetsk City didn't even exist until 1869 when an English man (John Hughes) walk past it.

Very warm and nice climate year round.
Lots of fertile land that's also good for growing wine grapes.
Oil resources.
Crimean Mountains are majestic as fuck.

Honestly, only downside is that the waves are too small to surf outside of the occasional winter storm.
Other than that Crimea is incredibly nice.
>t spent many summers in Alupka and Yalta as a kid

Access to Mediterranean
>>
It's the only year-round warm water port Russia has access to
>>
There's also the fact that Crimea is a huge piece of land that's super easy to defend because it has a very small number of road/bridge access points.

Technically there's Kaliningrad, but it's an exclave so it doesn't really count.

It's like a big island which is highly defensible to an enemy attack. The geography resists the movement of troops through the isthmus which are simultaneously vulnerable from defensive naval forces and garrisoned troops.

The surrounding region is extremely fertile "black earth", one of if not THE most fertile regions in the world. Crimea represents and natural citadel for a large pastoral and agricultural producing region. The very jagged coastal appearance on maps denotes its vast coastline of inlets supporting fisheries. It features many trade routes coming and going from all directions especially in the historical eras of the world.

This mfer knows his shit. I had to play an EU4 mod to learn that the French didn't extinguish the Ænglish continuation of government.
