A Binghamton-area contractor was arrested Tuesday afternoon on hate crime charges after he called for State Senator Lea Webb to be “hung from a tree” on social media.James Crosby, 49, made the comments on a Facebook post from WBNG 12 News promoting a story from the TV station about a Juneteenth event where Webb, who is Black, was a speaker. She represents Tompkins, Broome and part of Cortland counties in the state Senate.Crosby was arrested by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office around 4:40 p.m. on a charge of making a terroristic threat, which was classified as a hate crime. In a subsequent investigation, New York State Police investigators found several illegal firearms and accessories in Crosby’s possession. He was later charged with four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree, all class D felonies.While Crosby is prohibited from possession of firearms altogether due to a prior felony conviction, the weapons he had in his possession are illegal for anyone to own under state law. They include an assault style rifle, a silencer and a high capacity ammunition feeding device.The Ithaca Voice reviewed a screenshot of Crosby’s original comment from June 19. The comment has since been removed from the Facebook post.“I’d be proud to hang her from a tree,” Crosby wrote.Crosby, who is white, made the apparent reference to lynching on Juneteenth, the federal holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned of their emancipation. Crosby appears to be one of several Facebook users who made racially charged comments on the WBNG 12 post, though his appeared to be the most incendiary.

Following the incident, other social media users began to advocate for a boycott of Crosby’s business, Crosby Home Improvements. The Binghamton City Democratic Committee also called for an investigation into the incident.The Facebook page for the contractor business is currently listed as unavailable. On June 22, Crosby posted an apology on Facebook in which he acknowledged making a comment about Webb but said he had “not intended to be racist in any way.”“I understand the harm I have caused and will work on the way I express myself,” Crosby said.In the apology, Crosby said his comment was motivated by news stories about how Webb had received free legal aid from a nonprofit law firm in a foreclosure case on her Binghamton-area home. Webb had previously secured $30,000 of state funding for the firm. State watchdogs said the relationship created an appearance of a conflict of interest.At the time, Webb said she planned to pay the firm for its services in response to a request for comment from The Ithaca Voice.Webb did not respond to a request for comment sent prior to the news of the arrest.
