Honestly baffling to me how even communist dictatorship China can produce world-class masterpieces that critically depict the shifts in eras and regimes (Yu Hua's Brothers, The Three-Body Problem, or Farewell My Concubine), and yet Japan has failed to produce any decent work that portrays the absurdity and injustice of the imperial era

We are the samurai who brought Asia to heel
Japanese are utterly incapable of creating, all they can do is take something some other cultures had produces and attempt to polish it with varying results. Since they imported their entire culture from China, they have not created anything new, but rather worked on shaping what they got from China and later on things they managed to acquire from the West. Even Dragon Ball, one of their all-time most popular anime originated as an attempt to reconstruct the "Journey to the West". Their Gods are almost all either Chinese or Indian with their name spelt a bit differently and their stories a bit changed. Do not expect much from them - they are a culture of taking, recycling and claiming the result as theirs.
You want us to become your ladies, white ghost? We won the moral victory you nuker coward, you couldn't fight our warriors head on
>>537775261>of the imperial eraThe "imperial era" was when Japan was ""modern"" and ruled by yids and anglos. Nobody is gonna make a work that criticizes that. What you mean is the Tokugawa shugunate era, and there's a shitload of media criticizing it.(Nips don't care tho, they still consider Tokugawa to be some sort of demigod superhero.)
>>537775557How the fuck is this even a defensible opinion on an ostensibly anime-themed forum

>>537775770Anime was based almost entirely on Western animation. Mostly Disney's works. It is in no way original. However, Manga is a different story, here I will give credit where it is due. Manga is an almost purely Japanese creation and its honestly far superior to anime. So, I was too harsh indeed - manga is a very Japanese kind of art.

>>537775919Miyazaki is friends with some soviet animator and admires soviet animation.
>>537775261They criticize it all the time, especially in the wave of postWWII pacifism. Because for them, the Imperial era was the era of swift modernization. So it looks very very different (and better).
>>537775770>>537775919like 90% of anime and manga is based on western culture and mythology. You rarely see works based on japanese culture and mythology and those few that you do see have chinese influences.
