Something that I thought about a couple of weeks ago was how ours is the first real generation that has such universally accessible evidence of what the past looked like. Obviously there were historical accounts and various pieces of writing or paintings that showed us what the world was like a couple of hundred years ago; but it wasn't until when, the 1980s maybe that the proliferation of television and camcorders made it possible to just record an entire society and archive that. I was watching an episode of Johnny Carson that was on New Years Eve 1974 and it made me feel very melancholy. Things were apparently not ideal at the time and the guest said that she was sure that things would get better in 1975. It cut to the studio audience and it was surreal seeing what America (and LA even) used to look like.
