Everyone sees him as this dour righteous defender of freedom giving a warning call against tyranny. But the fact is that he was an immensely mordant humorist, a very funny guy. In Road to Wigan Pier he's staying in a boarding house of the lowest order. Table de Hotel for breakfast. The proprietor was a man with filthy black hands who insisted on buttering the bread and passing it to the tenants with a big filthy thumbprint on the slice of bread. One day George passing him in the stairway saw him clutching a loaded bedpan swimming with filth. The proprietor's thumb was hooked well over the rim of the chamber pot. Also Coming up for air is really hilarious with a savage /pol/ cynical humor and a not so subtle hatred of jews, women and children and modernity. I strongly recommend it. He's got a different sense of humor than Evelyn Waugh but he's at least as funny as Waugh's early novels.
