Why were millennials so fixated on irony? Was it some sort of a coping mechanism?

>>537809521>fixatedi see what you did there op
We briefly had it so good that we thought nothing mattered
The first "jaded" generation is gen x See grunge reality bites etcIt just rubbed off and turned millenials into irony snark filled self aware jokes
>>537809620it's only put together to take a picture and show it to the internet. millenials that were into building fixies were all pretentious fags who never actually rode their bikes
>>537809521Yes. But it was also inherited from the 90s Gen Xers. Millennials just took that and made it worse with the forced "quirkiness" element. Gen X's irony was more just shitting on things
>>537809521Lays of irony is the highest level of comedy and insight
I think it's more just how adaptive irony is for the internet, where the goal is to make your opponent mad while presenting yourself as unflappable. In real life it comes off as effete and can be countered by confronting someone which forces them to get serious, but since you can't do that online it's all reward no risk to just always be like "heh you can't even understand how many levels of not taking this seriously I'm on, nothing gets under my skin and if you respond at all that means you're mad and I win"
>>537809521My theory is that it was an answer to Gen X’s failure to achieve anything. They were the rebellious ones, giving the middle finger to the establishment. Millenials grew up in their IDGAF culture but when they grew up they realized they the Gen X generation didn’t achieve anything or became the establishment themselves. The world that was promised to millenials began to crack with 9/11 and finally broke with the financial crisis. At the same time social media and smartphones suddenly opened up a space exclusively for millenials. When you think about the early days of the internet almost everyone was young, so it was a space where millenials only observed themselves creating some form egomania. Now you have a disillusioned generation only revolving about themselves, an objective bad cultural situation. The way to cope with this is to stop taking one seriously and devolve in irony and later post irony.
>>537809521you are a jew, die.
>>537809521Valid generational complaint. And i will not stop doing it. XD.
