So basically you have to be in a cult to be in politics?

After Andrew Yang lost so spectacularly, I concluded that... yes.
You can say all the right things and still lose.

Its more like cultish behavior has an outsized advantage in american politics, because you only need surprisingly small power block to take a political party hostage, and in so doing protect yourself from the consequences of your actions.

Think of it this way: federal elections these days frequently come down to a 1-3% voting difference, and that tiny difference is the line between winning an election and losing one. So if you manage to get a movement that has even 5% of the voting power of the republican party (for example) despite being a tiny fraction of the overall voters you are a large enough segment that losing you makes victory IMPOSSIBLE for the party. As long as your cult doesn't give a shit about anything but themselves and their own goals, and is actually willing to split and leave the republicans to fail at the drop of a hat, they have no choice but to bend to your every whim because you are the kingmaker. They either do things your way, or not at all.

Once the party leaders have realized this and been forced to accept it, you basically run the show. you can take a shit on Mitch Mcconel's chest in the middle of the senate floor and he has little choice but to grit his teeth and thank you for the political bravery you've displayed because the alternative is losing control of the senate and thus all of his power. There is no action so extreme or heinous that they can afford to cut you loose.

If you reduce a group of supporters if a movement to such terms then yeah I guess.

If you follow the rules of the committee of 300, then you are allowed to do as you please. Even if you are acting against the deep state.

Here's another sign of a cult.
