(You) ever noticed until the late 80s college was something you did if you wanted to have a specific professional career such as an engineer, economist, historian, teacher and such but then something changed.

Suddenly every TV show, such as Friends, started subtly pushing "everyone goes to college" as the norm. Through such propaganda methods, they successfully made college the second highschool and something you had to do if you wanted to not "miss out" on being cool and successful.

This has of course massively enriched the universities, and we're at the point where you're looked down on as lesser if you do not go to college.
