In a nutshell - inferiority complex. They see the US as more capable compared to them, so they have to find areas where they can actually compete with Americans and even outperform them. The cultural aspect is one such thing, where they can pretentiously discard all American achievements on the basis of American society being lowbrow and thus inferior to their own group. Food elitism is just the easiest way of doing this, but it also translates to movies, books, art etc., since those are areas that are impossible to objectively assess and therefore you can just claim yours are better and everybody who disagrees is merely too ignorant to see it.

The only thing I'm envious about is your weather and unapologetic freedom of speech which btw is slowly eroding.Everything else is mid at best. I don't give a fuck about your processed goyslop food, I like my walkable city that doesn't force me to drive everywhere. I like not having to worry about health insurance and bills if I'm sick or dying. I like having 30 days of fully paid annual leave and 12 months of sick pay. I like our small venues rock culture. I like having functional public transportation that gets me anywhere in country in few hours.
