I believe it's more accurate to say that there is the existing order and "the left", which is a nebulous coalition of order-smashers, and they go through successive stages with different names as they smash more and more things. The liberals and republicans were the left in the past, and they have become communists and socialists now, and the "right" (from the left's pov) lags behind trying to stop more smashing from happening. At some point, defenders of the family, religion, property, authority, hierarchies, whatever, all become enemies of the smashing left, and so become right-wing. It's similar to the overton window perspective but it naturally explains the reason it moves left, and why conservatives always lose (and are leftwing by any historical standards)
