Social media as a vector of information rewards memes over discussions and makes it extremely easy to manipulate users into false realities by means of algorithmically funneling like minded people together and manufacturing the illusion of a widespread approval using bot accounts. We don't have the social framework or psychological immune system to deal with being dropped into the matrix like this and being gaslit with a neverending stream of distractions and bullshit information. If you control one of these platforms, you can eventually indoctrinate almost anyone into almost anything, especially once generative AI gets involved and responses can be tailored to the individual in real time. Teenagers and younger *absolutely* shouldn't have access to social media, but honestly I don't think its healthy for anyone else right now either. Not until we come up with some kind of better, underlying structure to it that makes it less of a cognitohazard.
