Landlords for actual buildings do produce something. Landlords who own actual land and then charge people to “use” it produce nothing. It very much is the same as Adam Smith’s given example for rent-seeking of a medieval lord extending an impassable chain across a river and charging people to lift the chain because it’s “his” river. It’s creating an artificial solution to an artificial problem that in the end produce nothing at all.

You could argue that the government is the biggest land owning parasite of them all since it charges property tax in perpetuity on its owners, but government actually does give tangible services in return. It provides irrigation if needed, security from criminal trespass, and a 24/7 fire brigade. John Landownerberg III does none of this for the people that he charges to build on or occupy “his” land.

Not related to him, but someone has to do SOMETHING about rent prices at some point in time. Rent keeps going on and less people are able to afford it, and if they can it's shitboxes. If allowed to, rent will only continue to go up and up and no one will be able to afford a house or to pay rent anymore. Running away to cheaper states or areas won't help because more people will flood into those places and prices will go up, the problem isn't gonna go away or stay contained in big cities only.
>>
>>537868792

If landlords can't make a profit without making things horrible and if the "market" can't function with a rent freeze that is necessary to control the damage on society caused by landlords then that is an argument against landlords and the market.
>>
>>537866899
*Freeze frame*
You might be wondering why im homeless right now. We you see, no one is moving because they like thier prices, so rentals that DO come on the market are hella expensive. Why? Cause there less to be had. I know right. Someone kill rich landlords or something. Its totally not government meddling thats causing it.
>>
>>537868977
That's not true. It's entirely possible for you to work for a wage and not be working class. Communism defines the bourgeoisie as the middle class.
>>
>>537868121
>Force landlords to maintain property by law
What if they cant afford the upkeep on the building because the rents are frozen? The property would be seized by the government/banks. Since the government cant even fill in potholes in a timely and efficient manner, what are the odds they'll be able to properly maintain an apartment, or 10, or 100, or 1000?

Doesn’t exist socialism in USA.

And socialism and even communism is good, capitalism is bad, you are brainwashed to be against good things for your own interests to benefit billionaires and trillionaires who care more about their own profit and the profit of their nepobabies.

Capitalism is bad and USA have millions of homeless people and people without healthcare, USA economy depends of tariff other countries, bomb other countries, steal other countries, other countries of the world having fear of USA, accepting USA propaganda for the empire and genocidal colonialist state of Israel invented in 1948 when some years before colonialists were already working on have some colonial territory here because they discovered that Middle East would be rich and full of oil and resources in the future and this is why Israel for decades is expanding, killing people and children without any movie of USA against Israel and no reparations for the countries destroyed for the interests of Israel. 90% of Democrats support by omission and 90% of the Republicans support actively.

Only on China have socialism, a developing country who grows every year and its rare to have homeless people and people without health care even having a bigger population than USA.

If USA were socialist wouldn’t not have millions of homeless people and people without healthcare.

This guy maybe for the garbage standards of USA as right wing country with right wing democrats since race baiting to remove attention of the crimes of Israel and pretend that USA is good people when their economy depends of keep other countries poorer, tariffed, economically destroyed, invade them, steal them and these things, democrats are right wing and republicans are far right. They are all capitalists and if wasn’t socialism all the workers would still be slaves with the minimum only to eat and live, would be much worse than the capitalism of today world.

I think this guy was invented because many people was hating the genocidal state of Israel so USA needed a guy to pretend that Democrats are Israel too like Reepiblicans, so they invented this guy who never will public say that Israel is a genocidal state and that USA if were the good guys and cops of the world would need to demand Israel to pay reparations for Palestine, Lebanon and Israel and USA should divide reparations for Iran, the Democrats who pretend to be good people will never try to defend the people and kids who Israel killed, never will demand reparations of Israel for these countries, will not give all the oil and money who USA take from Venezuela by stealing their oil and dominating their country for USA interest, and will always say for countries don’t negotiate with China or Russia as strategy of American empire and will support the colonialist expansionist state of Israel.

it depends, some are people who could exist on passive income if they wanted. This is a good post. If landlords were like super responsive to problems, spent money on good utilities like washers and dryers, and it was competitive theyd provide a real service. But most landlords put in absolute bare minimum in maintenance and dont live in the building or communicate with the tenants at all.

Just like with healthcare, free market economic principles cant apply when there is distorted / unlimited demand

Socialism is evil because it screws the future for the sake of the lazy present. Freezing the rent doesn't help anyone, in fact, the future generations of NYC will have to pay even more rent once Mamdani's social experiment fails. Rent should naturally go up with inflation and only going down as less demand (cities like NYC always have demand). If you're too stupid to pay rent in a city, you should move to a chepaer city. You won't because you lack skills, you're useless trash. Lefitsts need to be expelled from the West.

So far Mamdani has enabled his admin to seize buildings in states of disrepair. He has now enacted a rent freeze. Anyone see where this is going? I will tell you.
Landlords will have to deal with rising costs and must seek an avenue to save money. Maintenance being the first one to go. Their buildings will fall into disrepair and Mamdani will seize it for himself, I mean the people. The maintenance issues won't be solved and the landlord will have lost his property.
This is actually a direct case of cause and effect. If I was a landlord, I would sell immediately and get the fuck out of NYC.

This is in part true. Even the father of capitalism Adam Smith thought as much.
>"Rent, considered as the price paid for the use of land, is naturally the highest which the tenant can afford to pay in the actual circumstances of the land. In adjusting the terms of the lease, the landlord endeavours to leave him no greater share of the produce than what is sufficient to keep up the stock from which he furnishes the seed, pays the labour, and purchases and maintains the cattle and other instruments of husbandry, together with the ordinary profits of farming stock in the neighbourhood. This is evidently the smallest share with which the tenant can content himself without being a loser, and the landlord seldom means to leave him any more. " - Wealth of Nations Chapter XI.

What’s crazy is that they have the perfect example of how to deal with muh rent across the river.
Rent in Jersey city and Hoboken has been flat or declining, because the city went out of its way to tone down its bureaucratic requirements for building projects and super actively pursued and encouraged the building of massive residential skyscrapers. Thousands and thousands of new units every year in the past decade, to the point that it’s pissing off condo owners because their places missed out on the COVID price surges.
Literally THE ONLY THING THEY HAVE TO DO is stop strangling and being hostile to new construction. That’s ALL they have to do. And they won’t.

It's especially unfair when you realize we are all collectively paying for the landlords' apartment complexes through inflation because they finance their construction through fractional reserve banking which is functionally identical to counterfeiting.

Literally 100% of what a landlord owns, we all paid for, but it's only the landlord who collects rent. And he collects rent from tenants who helped fund his building against their will.

If I'm going to be forced to see the price of everything go up because of landlords, then I'd rather the renters just have free fucking housing and have the landlords receive nothing just as we the sufferers of their inflation have received nothing.
>>
>>537875552
They don't though. They buy up the shelter and force you to pay not for it's value, but for what they can sqeeze out of you to have said human need.

>all these posts claiming landlords produce housing
- They purchase housing to rent out.
- They then collect money from people who eventually would purchase homes.
- They use this to purchase homes, often competing with other landlords who also have a lot more money than they should.
- The demand for house ownership has stayed exactly the same, but the cost of purchasing a home and the cost of renting, both shoot up, because housing has become a speculative commodity for landlords to play with. Money is being used to extort money.

The funniest part is, for pol, when I say landlords, it's not actually natives. Because even "native landlords" are (because this is a commodity) susceptible to international investment. If a house is in their purchasing power, it's getting bought, whether they live in France, Spain or Germany. The biggest investor wins.

And this is before we even take into account property management firms and international companies that have been replacing them for the past two decades.

These houses are supposed to be either the state's property to rent to citizens at a reasonable value until they can afford a home, or sold as people's first homes. Not this insane situation where it's an extremely safe alternative to the stock market, if you've got the capital for it.

NYC in general is the most hostile place to build housing period. They aren’t going to build more housing, there’s plenty of vacant units anyways. The problem is the city gets so in your ass that it’s better for these owners to keep them unoccupied and write the losses off on taxes compared to getting a family of 4 niggers in there who will stop paying rent, destroy your property, and be allowed to stay for 2.5 years after they stop paying.

I lived in Brooklyn many years ago, and they were going to build a new building in the neighborhood I was in. It would have added an additional 80 units (a good amount for this small section) but everyone got in a fucking uproar because “the building was too high”, it was like 8 stories. They cry about more housing then piss and moan when people try to build it lmao.

Also walk around and look at these townhomes people want to renovate (not even new building), there’s like 40 fucking permits stapled to the front of the home before they can even lift a hammer.

interesting
When people talk about working class, I don't think it is purely defined by the economic element (e.g. the person's relationship to their work/business/equity). I think there's a social element as well (e.g. their connections, opportunities). Hence the term 'socioeconomic class'

So CEOs, who have more connections, a stronger reputation and more familiarity with the system, can navigate it more competently, allowing them to be more successful at launching businesses or finding new work.
Though I concede that the CEO of a small local accountancy firm wouldn't really have those connections or benefits.
(And civil servants who are supposedly of a high socioeconomic class and do have those connections, might not get paid that much.)

There are only three possible outcomes:

1--> White people kick out all the non-Whites (not gonna happen)

2--> We all just live together miserable (it will get so bad that the Whites won't put up with it... we only put up with it so far because we had suburbs to retreat to and the country was still prosperous enough to kick the can down the road for a couple generations)

3--> Balkanization (most likely outcome... because there really isn't any other option)

It's almost hard to believe you're not a bot. Landlords really do represent perhaps the most egregious flaw of capitalism, namely wealth creating more wealth. If you have enough money, all you need to do to live comfortably and increase your wealth is to keep buying houses and renting them. You literally produce nothing, and yet you only ever increase your share of the work output of the country. It really is a massive flaw, and everyone kvetching and claiming otherwise is simply a retarded cultist of capitalism not much different from the social justice warriors of the left.

But the question is, how do you fix that problem?
>>
>>537881104
By outlawing home renting. It's as simple as that. As soon as the consistent money flow drops, homes will become affordable again because people want to get rid of their liabilities.

>Wealth is what funds all of your social programs. If the people with wealth leave, which they can do, you stop eating. Your grandma stops getting her medicine. Wealth is also needed to grow the economy.
I see. So all there was to it was you being extremely naive and ignorant about what wealth is. A landlord's wealth is in the apartments he owns. He can't really pick them up and leave. Some other forms of wealth are a bit more liquid, but capital flight is a complete non sequitur in this context anway. Besides, capital controls do exist.
>It would be natural growth.
>I'm not sure what you're saying here.
>You can't do that with property or food.
People naturally need houses. You buying houses just to keep them empty is rather artificial. And if you don't keep them empty, you did not increase the size of the market. And an empty house is not very different to rotting food, hence the analogy.
>>
>>537881760
They're not stupid, it's all deliberate. Housing markets, homelessness, dumb hyperfocused ecological shit, massive public works boondoggles like HSR, it all serves one singular purpose. It's a goal with nebulous hard to define completion conditions. Every year they can shift the standards so it looks like they're making progress but not quite enough to reach the 10 year goal so they can beg for more funding which never makes it to the project, never creates observable positive improvements and is just somehow never enough. Of course all that money is getting contracted out to family member owned businesses of people on the city council/state legislature that appropriated the funds in the first place.

Much like was the case with the Spaceshuttle program in the latter part of the 20th century, the point is the dispersal of funds. Any actual physical tangible outcomes were a bonus, but were not the motivating goal.
>>
>>537868874
those won't be the ones locked. it'll be the naive ones trying to get into the game by invested 20 years of labor into a single apartment that they can't afford to fix now so it'll go to shit while some Guatemalan squats in it

>What if they cant afford the upkeep on the building
State takes it.
>Since the government cant even fill in potholes in a timely and efficient manner
They can, and they do sometimes when they want things to be nice. Like when Xi visited San Francisco, so the city cleaned up the streets and arrested all the criminals overnight. Then Xi left and the city released the criminals back on the streets and halted all the cleaning again. There's actually a "fix everything" button and you can just push it. No differently from what happened in El Salvador, China, Russia, Orania, 3rd Reich Germany, and many other examples. You're acting like the Richest country on Earth doesn't have the resources to provide housing to its citizens. It actually can, you're just living under hostile foreign occupation.

>>537880083
>You can't use laws to compel behavior
>You can't use laws to punish bad behavior
>The richest country on Earth can't provide housing and actually needs to have a permanent underclass of homeless junkies
Google all the countries that have low homelessness or high homeownership and look how they did it. Same thing I'm proposing. Deport everyone who doesn't belong, arrest criminals, and then mandate housing. It actually works and results in high quality of life and lifts the entire lowerclass into being effective members of society.

My point is that we have built a society overleveraged around shareholders and those with economic power much to the detriment of those with power.
And the only counterbalance to the powerful and wealthy is mass population movements to finally take some of the authority back.

If you want concrete shit. First pass the housing bill (but reform it so it also limits the number of properties one person/company can own, and cap the total valuation of it to an algorithm based on regional and national property values). Then you need to get money out of poltics, and reform the system so that it's not so easily bought or prone to corruption in general. A good society doesn't need to treat everything like an investment. They don't do that with housing in Japan, and their housing is also far more affordable. Priced more by where it's at, and what people can afford rather than what companies can afford.
If you're an independent landowner you would benefit long term from such a shift too.
>>
>>537883305
Property tax is an important revenue stream. If you destroy the housing market, you won't continue to get that money.

You're again just making these extremely vague connections to taxation and food, but these are in no way related to your original claim that wealth is good on its own, especially when talking about the wealth of landlords. Sure, if we were talking about the gross output of the nation, and defined that as wealth, wealth would indeed be good because that's directly connected to the tax money and the value of that money.

But I honestly think you're beyond help. You're so religious about your ideology. You spout bullshit and are apparently physically incapable of talking like a decent person, and I think I've reached my tolerance for that nonsense by now.

But people with houses support regulation. That's just trying to scapegoat some inanimate subject while the individuals who actually drive policy continue to enforce it.
You say housing needs to be high value to complement current tax schemes, but that's a clearly unsustainable course where future generations will be increasingly unable to afford homes. A house can't be an investment in a healthy society. It can't rise in value faster than inflation and wages. Speculation is the enemy of healthy economies.
>>
>>537883558

I'm pretty sure we have quite a few taxes other than property taxes too. And if people spent less on houses, they'd surely spend more on something else. You clearly have zero reasonable arguments as to why wealthy landlords are something to be desired.
>>
>>537884173
Right. It has multiple taxes, but if it loses it's property tax income it will need to cut spending. That will undoubtedly include subsidy since yours is one of the most subsidized countries.

I think part of the separation between old and new world is that we new world people can envision changing a system that we are a part of. I am the landlord, like I was the renter. I consider it beneficial to have wealth generating wealth be a facet of my economy, because it implicitly suggests I and others can reap that benefit, which incentivizes participation.
