How is the humidity? Looks cozy.
>>
>>537871671
this time of year, as high as a jungle. people who use the word cozy aren't built for SE USA weather, you'll die or cry the whole time so fuck off you gayy nigger

I think the ppl that walk the trail for 6-8 months starting in April are cool. I want to try it
>>
The closest I've been is Blacksburg. Does that count as the Appalachia?
>>
>>537871484
you can fart there. you should read leroy hammonds book "a place to fuckin' fart" about farting and fucking in rural appalachia.

excessive
I recommend mini splits
you can escape if you go to high enough elevation (4k+)
there's whole boomer filled towns for that (boone, blowing rock, highlands)

>>537871786
that's repetitive and stupid, finding tiny random trails is much more fun

>>537871805
definitely, I found a great overlook of the new river roadside near there, got a great view of the river right after helene when it was running at 120,000 cfs

The people who think it’s beautiful and people great are Appalacians who’ve never really left Appalachia. There lot of places, even within America, that have nicer forests and wilderness and wildlife. The people are nice, but not particularly nicer than other rural or even urban folk, but noticeable simpler and less intelligent and proud of it. Bluegrass and bourbon is based, but neither really come from there anymore….

one of the best areas in the USA as far as geography goes. also one of the oldest. it used to be a much larger/higher mountain range but it has been beaten down by erosion over millions of years.

I don't think the people here are dumb, certainly not compared to brown or blacks in the cities. It's mostly Germanic whites here. They are good with their hands, optimized for spatial intelligence.

Two questions -
why do houses leave their exterior lights on during the day? It's not just this one. A lot of people do it. I guess to say, we are here, don't rob us.

Also, why do so many people treat their properties as outdoor garbage dumps?

Pretty much nailed it imo. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are both very similar and much better, and Nashville isn't far either. Very nice cemetery though, and some neat horticultural things around if you're into trees and stuff.
Pic unrelated but it is from Appalachia. Natural Tunnel State Park in Virginia, they built the railroad through a naturally occuring tunnel.

cincinnati seemed more lively, maybe a bit smaller than louisville, less spread out, slightly less ghetto, more homespun, I've spent a couple days in Cincin now, only a few hours just passing through Louisville. Pittsburgh is smaller than cincin and a tiny city, just lots of suburbs in all directions, and kinda dead and not a lot going on but medical care.

Yeah redpill me on where the nice trees are.

>Pic unrelated but it is from Appalachia. Natural Tunnel State Park in Virginia, they built the railroad through a naturally occuring tunnel.
I've driven past like 10 times or more but never gone in to do the chairlift. Would be cool to go on the day the railroad doesn't run and you get to walk through the tunnel.

The big Ginko in Cave Hill Cemetery and Arboretum, they also have some massive Dawn Redwoods and a slew of state champions and I think a national contender Willow Oak. A big windstorm went through since I was there though, so they may have lost a lot. South of town is the Bernheim Forest, another great spot with a lot of hikes and a massive curated native forest.
Funny enough I believe both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are larger overall, but the terrain makes them seem smaller. Pittsburgh has more stuff uptown? I believe that's what it's called, but the parks downtown are pretty nice. If you don't mind drinking with leftists, Covington in Northern KY is the best place in Cincinnati imo. There's an excellent little dive called Wunderbar, great food and cheap beer.
I braved it on a day with the lift, it's a bit of a hike down, just steep. Officially, you can't go in the tunnel, but as you can see, there's nothing stopping you. The place I work for is winding down our operation in Kingsport, so I decided it was time to go

I love my area of Appalachia. I bought 10 acres with a 2,000 sq foot house at a very reasonable price. My property is in an area that is mostly national forest and for that reason is very lightly populated. A 200 acre state wildlife sanctuary borders my western property line. Appalachia has a moderate climate, lush vegetation, abundant sunshine and rainfall. We have strong storms that bring heavy rain that quickly pass leading to sunny days. These strong passing storms provide us ample rain while allowing a high percentage of sun during the day. Portions of Appalachia are designated as temperate rain forest.
Appalachia has a tremendous amount of freshwater streams and rivers enabling an abundance of fish and wildlife, including large game such as white tail deer, feral pigs and black bears.
Appalachia also has a rugged, independent, even rebellious population. Appalachia's rugged terrain, moderate climate, abundant fresh water and game make it a perfect area for the guerrilla war fighter.
There are many reasons that US Army Green Berets and Rangers retire to Appalachia. It is a place that calls people steeped in guerrilla warfare home.
Picrel is my horse grazing in a sunlit pasture next to an Appalachian mountain lake 900 feet from his barn.

99% of "Appalachian" discussions don't even revolve around real appalachia. everyone wants to be appalachian these days, that's why motherfuckers who abrely have a hill in the yard be like "this here is the holler, yep gotta love appalachia." not to mention, every region is pretty different. it's also nothing today like it was even 15 years ago. all the old ww2 generation died off and they were straight edge aside from some who drank. they didn't smoke the devil's lettuce. they didn't pop pills. they didn't trash their property. etc. most of the people left are their rebelious grandchildren that didn't move to other places for work. where I'm from, which is actually way up in the mountains was nothing like any appalachian hit piece documentary I've ever seen.I'm convinced they intentionally choose shitty areas and seek out retards.

families from blue field WV, went there a few times as a kid to hang out and a few times as an adult

we went up this mountain road, had no railings, look out the window and it's just a straight drop

went up to a little neighborhood, didn't have electricity or anything but the houses were gigantic with wrap around porches and such

went to visit my grand uncles father's grave, which was up a small trail from the neighborhood

any cincy/tn waterfall (easy to moderate) reccs?
I think Frozen Head is just kinda one view and it's not so great. There's some other views on the Cumberland trail but some are kinda obstructed and one requires staying the night at an overpriced hotel to access. TN is too commercialized, but sooo pretty.

Big South Fork is great, not too crowded, it's like a smaller gorge maybe 300 ft deep though some of the smaller rivers actually get to ~ 700 ft (im blanking on the name but overlooking the wolf river near pall mall, western edge of high plateau)

it has nice geometric branching canyons that look amazing in early spring, there's hundreds of overlooks extending up to rockcastle gorge, many are really hard to access though, this guy who was an ex-surveyor retired and posting all these random vistas on kylandforms.com but there's no instructions at all on where to park or how long of a walk they are or where to go beyond where the vista is

Yeah. But there's also that place near was it Brasstown Bald? where the SOGs practice their forest ambush skills on thru hikers. Then hand you a business card that says
> CONGRATULATIONS
> YOU'VE BEEN KILLED BY THE BEST
I had a goodfriend Ft Braggie tell me about this before my thruhiking there. So when I heard them doing the "woodpecker noises" up on the hill to alert each other to hikers coming, preparatory to ambushing, I noodled around the hill on a little barely visible forest path.
When I came out on the other side of the hill/rise/mt top and rejoined the main trail, there was this young guy in camo there. He looked so sad under his face paint, kek! They were all in the woods, up on the hill, hoping to get to ambush somebody.
I offered to drop pack, go back, and let them do it, but then his platoon leader or whatever came out and was laughing, then he whistled a bunch of them down.
I heard later that they got to ambush some weekend hikers later that day, so they were all happy.
What a great part of the world though. Wish it was colder and didn't have lightning.

Melungeons had to flee when the bootlickers allowed Jim Crow and the One-Drop rule. The mixed population is about the same as anywhere else desu. Appalachia today is drugs and poverty. The days of shooting a mine owner is long gone and theyre mostly bootlickers or lazy sacks of shit nowadays

My understanding is in many southern states rich white people would claim native descent, perhaps in truth, perhaps in ceremonial value, and so they amended racemixing laws so whites with small percentages of native wouldn't be sent to asylums to be sterilized like blacks would

When the Reckoning comes I will build fences from their skulls.

I'm drunk (If a stereotype is true, is it still a stereotype?) so I will happily admit I've killed two of those bastards over the last 10 years.
>>
>>537880881
I dunno I think there were issues before the Oxy the culture has always been about exploiting the land and the worker and enriching corporate profits. I've toured the house of the owner of the Western Maryland Railroad, which connected prime timbering and coal areas of eastern WV to Baltimore and at one point I want to say extended all the way to Snowshow or somewhere around there.

You have a lot of people who do physical labor and get injured, of course they are gonna be in pain and looking for relief. Doctors are to blame for not being careful. The government is to blame for keeping pot illegal.

I kinda like some of the fake swiss chalets, but that's very specifically a western NC thing where there's enough money in the tidewater and piedmont areas to support rich 2nd homes in the mountains.

>Linguistic, not cultural.
I was staying in southern NY recently and the place I was staying the toilet broke and when the family who owned the rental came over to help their accents were just amazing. I love the accents here.

>the culture has always been about exploiting the land and the worker and enriching corporate profits.

Jews and the coal industry. Read some history.
Before the corporate mines the Southern Highlands just wanted to be left alone.

>to support rich 2nd homes in the mountains.

Old Fort springs to mind. I'm a Virgina boy, so the Shenandoah Uplands is what I know.

Agreed. That and in the old days everyone had Poppy flowers in window boxes, and razor blades next to the watering can, then it became 20 years in jail.
