You can leave your Northward or courtyard facing windows open. They’ll actually draw warm air out. It’s just the sun-facing windows you want closed and shaded.

Ideally you have windows facing away from the sun or into a courtyard and circulate the air out with a fan or they have a nice breeze. Europeans also don’t properly ventilate their roofs so the hot air gets trapped upstairs.
