This petty nationalism stems from deep insecurity, where Slavic people try to make up for the lack of economic and other development by overfocusing on their national identity to the point of creating myths around it to give at least some kind of imaginary superiority over others, especially those in the West. Unlike Westerners, Slavs do not want to live in the present, since the present does not live up to their expectations and refuses to comfort their unfunded sense of importance. So, they live in the past - in past wars, past achievements, past writers and scientists. Dealing with the past is easy because you can glamorize it anyway you want and cherry-pick whatever you want from it, even if it never existed. In the West it’s only the losers and sociopaths that indulge in this behaviour, since they have nothing else to derive pride and self-esteem from.
