the rail tracks near my house have these rubber-looking sides to them on the intersection, to make it less damaging to vehicle tires i presume. these things are constantly jumping up out of the tracks and making bigger bumps when it gets hot out. railway guys with hammers and crowbars wedge them back in ocassionallynever witnessed them melting but they are for sure expanding in +30c weather.
