As a carpenter, I've been wanting to move to Japan for a long time, because I really want to learn about working on Japanese style buildings. I hear they pretty much don't make any of them anymore though. Even the rich people stopped building traditional rich people Japanese homes in favor of modern McMansion slop.

It's called checking and it doesn't affect the structure at all. It's just the wood fibers gradually twisting as they completely desiccate over the years. Traditional Japanese construction pretty much never has leaks, because the roofs are put together with joinery, not fasteners, and ventilation is designed into the structure to keep air flowing at all times.

If you’ve never owned a home in America, you can’t appreciate what a bargain you have. It doesn’t matter where you buy in America, any house in your price range will need somewhere between $30k and $150k of maintenance to bring it up to code and basic safety standards. Boomers ruined these fucking houses man. At least with the Akiya, you got into a property and put a roof over your head for a fraction of the price. Spend under $50K renovating it, and then enjoy your low cost home or sell it for a small profit and rinse and repeat. Japan is the ultimate hack for building home equity.
