Hilux got nothing on the tacoma. Slow and loud engine with high consumption. Tacoma is the same exact size with a better interior and much faster drive train. The worst part is that the Tacoma costs much less (like 50%) in the US then what a similar spec Hilux costs here. As always, americans win.

Yeah the old hiluxes are super popular here, pretty typical baby tradies first car and every farm will have an old one kicking around. Even with half a million km's on them they're a lot more reliable than newer offerings.

>>537981195
>I found this, still too expensive
If it's in good condition (looks super clean) and if parts availability is decent up there you might find it's quite a bit cheaper in the long run and worth the investment, it'll probably last until they outlaw ICE engines or we all die in WW3 etc
>>
>>537980994
Contrarians love this car. Like in Doug Demuro's review where he goes on for half an hour about how "utilitarian" and "purpose built" it is because it has no comfort features. No, its just a stripped down Tacoma for poor countries.

The Defender will last you forever. You will be handing your grandkid the key. Prices are only going up for defenders. It will be like how the boomers all brought their houses for €8000 and now expect €800,000 for the same house 40 years later. Buy now or miss the train. The aftermarket scene is growing strong. People are swapping the old engine with a V8 or inline 6 and ZF8 gearbox.

>how rusty are the older ones. I never really looked into them.
All parts are serviceable. If (when) the original chassis rusts out you can buy a new chassis with modern metallurgy, galvanisation and powder coating they last effectively forever. All the body panels are aluminium so they don't corrode, only the chassis and bulkhead wall are steel, like I said you replace them with modern rust protected parts.
I don't know how things work in other countries but in the UK once you have the legal document for car ownership, V5c, you can replace all parts on these defenders. You could 'refurbish' the car and replace every part, not a single part remains of the original and that is perfectly legal. Hence why I said they will last forever.

Nah just in case you hit roos/cows (that's a bit of an extreme example). Helps to deflect them down and under the car and stop the car from being disabled so you don't get stranded hours from help etc

We do build some hilariously weird shit for catching feral buffalo though, they have big claws on the side, kinda like jurassic park toys kek

>>537982031
>Yea the problem is, for rhat hilux i send i would pay 233 euro a month in road tax
You guys paving your roads with gold or something? I pay $600~ AUD for a year for registration and then $200 for basic (and legally required) insurance that covers any damage I do to someone else or their property in an accident, but it doesn't cover any damage to my vehicle. I don't bother with more expensive insurance because my shit is all cheap/easy to fix/cheap to replace and insurance companies have a nasty habit of writing a vehicle off for minor things whereas i'd rather just fix them.

This is hands down the best thing about defenders, especially if you're looking at an older vehicle, especially if you live somewhere it snows/beach etc

Guys here tend to swap out the engines as they just don't like the heat(few engines do), but everything else on them is considered to be incredibly rock solid, lots of old army ones here still kicking around putting in some serious k's to.

Lrn 2 weld. Its essentially the modern form of knapping a stone to make a knife. Everyone should learn to weld. Most of the shit you own is made of metal or plastic. I bought a welder and a 3d printer because it makes no sense to not know how to repair things. Sure, it takes some time and practice but its a lifelong skill. If you don't learn how to weld at least put your kids in some program that teaches them to because it will be immeasurably usefull to them for their entire life.

It's something I wish more 4WD's had, it really is fantastic. It makes them incredibly light, very easy to work on, very easy to modify/fix. Any tard can work aluminium with basic hand tools and not having to worry about rust in seams, wheel wells etc is brilliant and if you dent or scratch them a bit it doesn't really matter.

If they're more widely available, better parts availability etc in your neck of the woods they're a very good alternative to a landcruiser/hilux. Just a good no-nonsense 4WD.

I'd love to get one of the ex aus army 6x6 ones here for the farm as they have a nice 2 ton carrying capacity.

There's a reason why they sold over 2 million defenders to almost every country in the world. The car brand Ineos formed when LR refused to sell the rights to build the old defender to Jim Ratcliffe after they discontinued it. The issue with the Ineos is there's too much electronics, too many emission systems, too much to go wrong. It can never surpass as the original land rover.
>>
>>537989069
Coating it with what?
>inb4 oil
Yea, thats snakeoil retardation and makes things worse. Toyota failed to properly treat their frames. It was a recall. I missed the window because the dealership kept telling me it didn't meet the requirements. Then after the recall had expired my entire frame went to shit.
The whole coating your undercarriage with oil meme stopped being relevant decades ago. You cant coat the inside of a tube frame where the rust begins. Youre harkoning back to the days of solid chassis construction.

I feel for my Eurofag buddies. I bought both my kids Tacomas and one of my dearest friends (we were high school exchange students) is stuck hauling his family in some beater car because he built a house, which sucked up his and his wife's income. He just seemed so beaten down when we visited Germany last summer. He sighed when he saw my son's Taco.

I've bought and sold a bunch of old Toyota FJ Landcruisers coming up from South America the past few years. Some just totally pristine, one was a tar baby I lost my ass on. Really fun and simple to wrench on. Ride like a buckboard wagon, don't really take them over 45-50mph, but I could drive them up the side of a tree. About the most electronics are the stereos I install.

Car taxes in the netherlands i# the state pulls out your fingernails and enslaves your children if you purchase a car weighing more than 1000kg, has 3+ cylinders or emits more than 75 grams of CO2. Car taxes in the Netherlands are bonkers, when you see a Dutch guy in a VW Polo with a 1200cc engine and airconditioning that means he just won the lottery. Yup. We have something similar in the u.s which answers why american cars such pieces of shit. California and their epa influence. Their market share of the auto industry dictates manufacturing which is why every car has ridiculously expensive emissions systems. Southern California has a particular geographical problem which results in smog so the rest of the country has to endure their faggotry. Whats funny is that these emissions systems cause vehicles to use more gasoline/diesel. We did reach a certain apex of reliability and fuel consumption but we have now gone full retard and made cars incredibly unreliable in order to meet the burden of California's particular problem.
