Football is the only real exception because of how it’s played and that you can punt. In hockey it’s called icing because you are just shooting towards empty ice. Basketball has fast breaks but your team has to get the ball first, you can’t just sit under the opponents rim until your team gets the ball to Hail Mary it to you. It’s just a sportsmanship thing really because otherwise everyone would be offsides constantly and dumping the ball wildly and making games take forever or coming up with ways to score that are borderline cheating because you always would have a guy 2 feet from your opponents goal
