Truman's cabinet was divided on whether to offer support to Israel in 1948, Eisenhower had Suez where he directly challenged Israeli foreign policy. Kennedy was pro-Israel and provided military support but it became institutionalized under Johnson.
Prior to WW2 the UK had the world’s largest empire. After WW2 it collapsed under financial burden and pressure from the USA. The USA wanted to make sure the UK would never be a rival again so they pushed for socialist and soviet aligned Abdul Nasser to nationalise the Suez Canal. Sad. To contrast, unlike Churchill De Gaulle of France was very suspicious of the Americans and fought to maintain independence and French colonial control a bit.
