That and the execution of John brown was what redpilled me on the civil war being a religious war. Sherman’s March to the sea doesn’t make sense until you realize the northern puritans were purging southern heretics that dared to apostasize against abolition. John brown was a murderer and a bandit. The shit he did in Kansas was disgusting. One mother who wrote to him at his execution described how he killed her husband and older sons despite them not owning slaves, and how her youngest son had travelled to watch him hang. Contrast that with Henry fuvking Thoreau whose widely published “plea for captain John brown” described him as a transcendental moral hero who would be lifted from the gallows directly to heaven by a choir of angels. Abolitionism was a religious movement which is why the reality of John browns actions did not concern them, nor did the reality brutal death by starvation of a full half of freed slaves concern them. If they had been concerned about the welfare of the slaves they would not have starved to death. No, the war was a religious war, and you can’t understand anything about it until you know that the point was destroying the white men who did not follow the northern dogma of abolitionism. I would also add, this is not a trivial point. This religious movement still exists today, and is the dominant ideological force in America. Every major civil rights movement in America is a direct lineal descendant of abolitionism, and that’s why you can’t reason with them. It’s a religious movement.
