Anyways the south didn't kill the idea- the main political opponent was a Senator from Massachusetts named Charles Sumner (who you may remember for the infamy of having his ass beat with a cane on the Senate floor before the war by a southerner). I would also remind you the Confederacy literally put explicitly in their Constitution that importing negroes was banned. Can the Rainbow States of America say the same about their constitution?
