I’m a blue collar worker and have mainly loaded trucks with a forklift for the past 10 years. It sucks but I scrape by. Today my supervisor called everyone in for a morning meeting and told us our sister location in another state would be shutting down by the end of next month. I live in a small town in bumfuck Texas and me and the other guys know that if this place shuts down too it’s going to be impossible to find another job without moving. Just when I thought the bad news had come and gone out boss tells us everyone working on the floor will have to mount a new device on our hard hats for workplace safety. It’s a fucking camera, I looked up the brand and they are being mass produced to train ai models. The worst part is that no one in the room said a damn thing, the older guys are about to retire in a few years and the other young guys don’t say anything just have their earbuds in all day. But I am most disappointed because I didn’t say anything. I felt like it would have been completely pointless and would only have drawn negative attention and rumors about me. After some thought I realized what happened to me in that moment is what’s going to happen to this entire county within my lifetime. I’ve been doomposting in my own head since then, what are we even supposed to do about this?
