It does seem possible the scenes were cut because they were too revealing, and most people think the cut scenes were some additional scenes during the orgy scene, and a extended ending.

Also, there's the problem of conflating orgy scene that had extra hooded guys blocking with actual cuts from the film. Both versions were released, same runtime. There are quite a few interviews with the editor, the screenwriter, etc and none of them ever even implied 20 minutes were taken out. They all agree it was his most recent cut of the film that was presented to the execs and released. that's not say it was "finished." I saw it opening day and there was a huge ugly razor blade like cut in the middle of the movie (tom was in the taxi) but it was smoothed out in all home releases.
