They are basically like walmart, except you get "shares" (which have shifted custodial ownership several times and you don't have any power over, basically you have to work 1,000 hours or more for five years then you become eligible for the program which used to match 20% of your wages to a 401k-esque account on some boomer site, and you can't sell the shares into cash until five years after you quit, good luck getting anything in 40 years when you retire, it's super shady and opaque, and there are tons of reviews / consumer reports where people don't get their money when they have <$10,000 in their account from working less than ten years and quit to work a different job).

Also, walmart is just more universal, as a general store; they are more expensive for food with overall lower quality than winco, but if you're out in the boonies or something, you probably have a walmart within twenty miles, and they have literally every department / category of stuff you could possibly need, and most of it is good enough. I'd rather have a walmart in my neighborhood than a winco by far, just as a general rule, maybe a sam's club if I wanted to pinch pennies.

Not since 2016. Costco is way better overall, for the customer and the employee, not to mention the company as a whole - the quality of merchandise and food is generally better, except maybe fresh produce, which is variable between the two companies.
