It's not always so simple. I was renting a place where I wanted to remove the smoke detector batteries so I could smoke in peace, but it was both hardwired AND had batteries, and when you removed the batteries, THEN it beeped. I'm 100% European-American/White/Aryan/Caucasian by the way.
