Has 'depression' actually increased in modern times (as demonstrated by the increase in anti-depressant drugs), or was it simply under-diagnosed and under-treated prior to modern pharmacology? How could we even know?

You're equating for profit prescriptions to cases of depression?

OP.
Has life gotten better?
I need you to really think about that first.
These weirdly loaded questions need to be thought through the whole way.
Conservatives seem willing to acknowledge that modern life is maladaptive but if you ask them if that can lead to more mental illness they suddenly side against the patient.

The traditional conservative view of 'depression' is to stop being a whiny bitch and to act like a normal man. Never cry and keep your faggy 'feelings' to yourself. And maybe that way of doing things has its advantages.

Depression is a clinical diagnosis of behavior, which makes it basically nonexistent. All this business about neurochemicals obscures this basic fact. Nevertheless it's clearly possible that brain chemistry faults can fuck you up, both your thinking and your behavior. But we don't know how any of that works, cause observing behavior is not scientific. There also isn't any such thing as an "anti-depressant" or "anti-anxiety" or anything of the sort; those are just names. The charitable interpretation is that therapy in general is not scientific, and that drugs can help a person report success with it. But anything that leads to "chronic" medication is probably a bad idea, and maybe evil.

Yeah. In the 19th century it was vogue to be a huge sadsack. In medieval times they'd say you were "beset by melancholia" and ban fish from your diet, owing to it's melancholic effects on the humours, for it is cold, wet, and dweleth in the dark. The ancients made countless religions about how shit the world is and promised ways to escape it. I'm sure there was at least one caveman thought "This shit sucks. What's the fucking point?"

There's no such thing as depression and ssris are a Jewish plan for chemical castration.

They got greedy and started taxing the medicine to prohibitive levels. Now people need pills instead.

We live in a society that is sick and fundamentally anti-human. Everyone being mentally ill is a reflection of that.

You don’t want to hear it but capitalism and technology is what is causing everyone to have psychotic breaks and mental illnesses. Return to the older ways, destroy Israel and modern society and see us be much happier across the board.
