The "Armenoid Merchant' is a Tang dynasty-era statue from the Chinese city of Chang'an. It depicts a foreigner from the merchant class carrying a wine container, and was made around the year 700AD. Merchants from Tang Dynasty China were often depicted with similar 'Armenoid' appearances. Interestingly, the dynasty also saw at least two large massacres of foreign merchants - one in the year 760 in the city of Yangzhou, and another in 878 in Guangzhou. Foreign merchants in China were often viewed with suspicion, and were accused of trying to curry favor with certain officials in order to manipulate political or economic events.
