The hoses appear to be fitted to "pass-throughs" designed to fit in the window opening. Perhaps the pass-throughs should be a bit larger.To your point, ideally you want the cross-sectional area of the rectangular pass-through to be close to if not the same as the circular pipe. You can see the rectangular pass-throughs better in this image on the right side. Maybe they could be a little larger too but maybe they are large enough, I don't have enough information on the air flow rate or other details.
