You seem to be confusing the left with democrats. lots of leftists like guns (partly because they think class warfare is an unavoidable fact of history) and don't have any fundamental objection to fighting in self0defense. It's liberals that tend to be very wishy washy and think all violence is bad and so on, because liberals tend to be kids who did well in school and think the adult world/economy can be run in a similar fashion to school, transferring crdibility to experts instead of teachers, not questioning authority too much etc..
