The prehistoric caveman was incredibly poor by modern standards. This is also why most people on earth are poor and have been throughout history. Wealth on the other hand is by definition taking more than you need. Nobody who is wealthy merely stops at having their needs met. All wealth accumulation necessarily redirects it from the possibility of going to others to meet their unmet needs. The two are in eternal tension and are only occasionally reconciled when the form of wealth accumulation happens to increase the general living standard of everybody else (by enhancing the means of production and so on)
