The South was looted after the war to punish the White Southerners. This screwed over the Blacks who were living there. If the South won and wasn't plundered, Southern Whites would have been better off, obviously. That would have made a better situation for the Blacks if they were freed but that probably wouldn't have happened. The going trend of that time was selling the slaves to another country that still practiced slavery and hiring wage slaves. It was cheaper to do that.
