The USPS has been declining for the last 6 years, but now it's starting to affect EVERYTHING including chicken farming. It's hard to get a package from just 100 miles away delivered to you in 7 days now. Where just 6 or 7 years ago it would basically only take 2 days. I specifically remember it being that way because I remembered when I was going to pay for the 2 day shipping the clerk would tell me most of the time that there was no need to pay for the priority shipping because it would make it there in 2 days just by paying the regular postage on it. So, I think it's safe to say ... since the USPS can't realistically ship baby chicks WITHOUT harming them then this practice needs to be made illegal. I actually don't order chicks in the mail anymore just because the chicks become traumatized from it and never recover. Incubating my own chicken's eggs and hatching them myself has been eye-opening in this respect. The chicks are so chill and calm, and don't mind me touching them or picking them up. They're happy and might even like me. What a stark contrast to the mail-order chicks who just cry and cry and cry all day and night, who die for no reason even with the best of care, and who fly into a blind terror if my shadow even crosses their path. It's really sad. I treat them all the same but they could not act more differently. Something about the shipping process (or maybe whatever the staff at the hatchery do to them prior to shipping) just FUCKS these babies up.
