There are asymmetries in tech and manpower, so Russia creeps the front line forward by inches and Ukraine destroys any attempt at Russia installing the necessary infrastructure in Donbas to scale the invasion up. Barring some catastrophic collapse of the Ukrainian armed forces or Putin dying suddenly and somehow being replaced with a moderate, the trajectory is that the war drags on for another few years until the Russians run out of political will and just go home. Compromise peace that nobody is happy with, probably Ukraine cedes occupied territory in exchange for EU/NATO membership.
