A lot of Russians that signed up are from economically stagnant areas, and the Kremlin was offering relatively attractive salaries and bonuses. This process actually resulted in the retribution of wealth from the wealthy and the middle-class savers (via inflation) to poorer Russians. Russia also tapped into its sovereign fund. This resulted in most Russians in metropolitan areas not being terribly affected, and people in backwater areas being much better off. Part of the reason why most Russians don't care about the war.

Furthermore, many Russians were taken from prisons to fight in the war.
