I just came back from New York after my first ever trip to America and honestly I don't know what to think. Since I was a kid I was fascinated by America. Through movies, TV shows and media it looked like this amazing place where everything was modern, exciting and larger than life. Visiting America, especially New York, was one of my biggest dreams. Then I finally went there and was shocked by how disappointed I felt. I saw drug addicts (mostly blacks) everywhere, even in Manhattan and other central areas, not some shady neighborhood. People walking around like zombies, talking to themselves and acting strangely. The subway felt chaotic and there were moments where I genuinely didn't feel safe. The city itself felt dirty, with garbage everywhere and streets smelling like piss, sewage and marijuana. The noise never stops either, with sirens, traffic and chaos everywhere. I also wasn't expecting the culture shock of seeing things uncommon where I come from, including men dressed as women and LGBT flags seemingly everywhere, even in places where I personally didn't understand why they were there. At one point I even thought that if I lived there long enough I would probably go insane and start voting for liberal parties too. Not everything was bad though. Times Square was impressive, Central Park was beautiful, the Brooklyn Bridge was great and seeing those skyscrapers for the first time really was amazing. But apart from those things, I left feeling mostly disappointed. So I have to ask Americans, how is this normal to you? How do you live like this every day? Does it eventually stop feeling strange? The saddest thing was seeing children growing up in that environment and wondering if they know life can be different elsewhere. If this is what people call the first world, then maybe I'd rather stay in my own so called "shithole" country after all.
