Neural implants for medical purposes are as far as it will ever go and even then it will be limited as to not topple the pharma industry. I feel really bad for the targets pre-AI that had to suffer for a decade or two believing some rando John and Sue were watching and tormenting them all day. Relief in terms of mental burden upon realizing a machine is monitoring you and not actual people 99.9% of the time was pretty drastic.
