In exchange, they received hard currency which they would use to import British-made finished goods. In other words Britain set them up to run a perpetual trade deficit with Britain. The slaves were brought in large numbers because the kinds of crops they grew were labor-intensive and highly-competitive globally. You could get rice or sugarcane for cheap elsewhere and if labor costs were too high no one would buy Southern products. First they tried things like indentured servants from Britain but they didn't pan out because the labor was too expensive, and when they tried enslaving the natives they all just got sick and died. Meanwhile the Spanish and Portuguese had been buying slaves from West African slave ports for a century already, and using that labor to build their colonies around the world. By the mid-18th Century the South was totally dependent on African slave labor to maintain competitive prices for their products, and while by the early 19th Century slavery was starting to die out, the cotton gin actually gave America cotton dominance and slavery experienced a renaissance. The founders had hoped the practice would simply die out on its own, but it didn't, and the issue came to a head again and again until it led to a war.
